Bioshock CAN run on old graphics cards
Just look at this, it’s actually running pretty smooth on my “outdated” X850XT PE. ScottJG, WarAnakin and Phazz over at the 2K Forum have been fooling around with the shader file for the game, manually going over all the code and tweaking it little by little making it possible to play the game on Shader Model 2.0 cards with decent looking graphics and performance, it’s not quite there yet but it’s closing in. Read on for solution downloads and installation instructions, updated each release!
NOTE: I’ve removed the links to all the patches as I no longer update or maintain this list. To get the latest versions and installation instructions visit www.paolofranchini.com/shshock

I’ll see if I can’t fix a single mirror for it all
Edit: There you go, all new download mirror. Just remember if you download bat files from these links, you need to right click and save it (after you’ve clicked the Download links here), otherwise it will just display it as text on a page.
Protip: The ones with graphic card that supports pixel shader 3, but are looking for performance boost, don’t recommend this one. Loading times turns to absolutely bollocks and if you’ve not backupped the whole deal, you need to reinstall to return things back to normal - which in my case means 15 hours of waiting for Steam to download the files
Yeah wouldn’t exactly advice using this method if you already have hardware supporting the game. The loading times are a comprimose we’ll have to deal with for now untill it’s been worked out.
You’re best of adjusting the graphic settings and tweak the ini files for better performace.
I suggest you backup the Shaders and ShaderCache files and just try out the newest patch, then work your way backwards if it doesn’t help.
As far as I can see after checking around, you might actually be the first to try it. You should try it and report back, it would help others with the same chipset ;) It’s good to know what it works on or not. So far there’s only been NVIDIA 5xxx, ATI 9xxx and x8xx users reported compatibility, best results on the x8xx cards most of the time untill recent patches.
all it seems to do when I run the exe is show a windows then the window disappears, any ideas why? i have also tried it using 3danalyzer and it does the same then. please can somebody help?
Sounds like a standard “This game won’t work on your machine at all so I’ll just shut myself down” type of scenario.
Your card may be using Shader Model 2.0 and not the specific 2.0b the latest patches have been made for. Beta 1 should work. And a bit more descriptons of your problem could help ;) And explain exactly what you did and where you put the files.
ATI AIW RADEON 9800 PRO:
No help, the graphics still look completely terrible. Hope that SOMEONE comes out with a fix since the stupid software company will not. What idiots to think that I am going to go out and buy a $600 graphics card to play this! Morons!
I am writing to see if anybody can help me
I am having problems running the game with this patch, I run the game, it shows the bioshock splash screen, then it shows a window then the window disappears.
How do I run this game? I have a intel 950 GMA chipset.
Please can somebody help me get this game work for me.
Thank you for your time
NSCXP2005
NSCXP2005, You didn’t list the specs for your comp and you didn’t say which patch you are trying to use. How do you expect anyone to help you?
But, since you have an integrated shader 2 graphics chip, it shares your system memory with your cpu. That means you would need at least 1.5 gig of memory and the game would still run like crap. It doesn’t appear you have the horsepower to run this game. That is probably the message in the window after the splash screen.
I have a core2duo 2.0 chip, intel 950GMA 128mb, 2gb ram, winxp media centre.
Used all patches. any ideas?
I have not tried all the patches yet, but the one that works best for me (and I have a Radeon 9600 which is an early Shader 2 card) is the Beta 1 patch here: bioshocksm2.blogspot.com/
(Later Shader 2 cards work better with Beta 2 and that is where development is focused right now.)
Also, install the Microsoft Visual C++ 2005 SP1 Redistributable Package (x86) here: microsoft.com/downloads/detail...
Finally, upgrade your video drivers. Uninstall the old ones first and then install the newest drivers you can find.
Hope it works for you.
I second that. Above patch (beta 1) was the only one that worked for me: Radeon 9600, Amd 64 2Ghz, and only 1gb RAM. Works fine.
Thanks for the patch coder and Truetejas. =)
I have a Radeon 9550 which I’m told is old, even though it was near the top just 6 months ago. I tried this fix but nothing new happened. Still only see smoky and bad fire textures plus no cursor. Is my card truly that old or did I just not install this properly? I downloaded the “AOH Fix 2 NEW” and put it in the correct folder. Any ideas?
The ShaderShock project forums are the best place to get the most up-to-date fixes for SM2.0 and SM2.0b cards. It’s linked above, but here’s the link again:
Why hello there, ReverendTed, one of the big guys around these parts ;)
But yes folks, please do visit the official forums as I haven’t been able to update here latetly, been quite busy with another personal project the last weeks.
i have a Raedon 9600 xt (256mb)
2.9 Ghz
2 GB ram
AMD x86 but i still dont get a cursos or anything in the game.. i use a crack though..prob?
i can see the first start guy who has a smoke and say some bullshit, but when the mission starts, i can swim….black screen…fire only… and i see the screen 100 times in MINIII size in the screen. :S suuux need help..Fix1 did u say. i g2 do Fix2?
